The 5th Seoul Biennale goes beyond viewing architecture purely from an aesthetic perspective. Instead, it focuses on the facades of buildings we encounter in our everyday lives and explores how architecture and urban environments can be made more enjoyable and engaging. The Biennale seeks to examine how the exterior of architecture affects our brain, body, and society as a whole―ultimately offering a fresh perspective on architecture through the lens of health and well-being.
This year, in particular, the Biennale will also provide a platform for in-depth discussions on the emotional power of architecture and how it can transform cities―such as Seoul and others around the world―into more joyful and inspiring places.
The Seoul Biennale will officially kick off with its opening ceremony on Friday, September 26, followed by the two-day Opening Forum (Global Dialogue) titled “Emotional City”, held on September 27 (Saturday) and 28 (Sunday). This forum will bring together approximately 400 experts from around the world to engage in meaningful discussions centered around the question, “How are cities made?” Together, they will explore new directions for the future of cities and architecture.
The forum will feature a wide range of programs, including presentations of innovative research, lectures based on real-world case studies, citizen-led projects, and creative urban interventions―all aimed at offering fresh perspectives on how we understand and shape our cities. In addition, a special performance by Seoul-based artists will provide an immersive and emotional experience, allowing participants to connect with architecture and the urban environment on a deeper, more sensory level.
TheThematic Exhibition, held at the Songhyeon Green Plaza, will feature a large-scale structure measuring 90 meters wide and 16 meters high, along with 24 outdoor instrallations. Together, these installations offer a fresh perspective on the relationship between cities, architecture, and people. At the Seoul Hall of Urbanism & Architecture, visitors can explore three exhibitions: Guest Cities Exhibition, showcasing architectural facades from cities around the world; Seoul Exhibition, presenting the past and future of Seoul; and Global Studios, an interactive exhibition created in collaboration with AI and visitors.
This year, a variety of public programs are also planned to help people better understand the themes and freely express their thoughts. We warmly invite you to join us in experiencing and shaping the stories of urban architecture together.
