A18 [Jerusalem] More Than One Language
More Than One Language reimagines Jerusalem through the Clal Center skin―where art, ecology, and community form a spiral model for regenerative urbanism.

The Clal Center always speaks in “more than one language”: A contemporary Tower of Babel in the heart of modern Jerusalem, it is planted on the Judea mountains watershed line, at the point where pilgrims first glimpsed the ancient city and made their final stop―a mixed multitude of generations and territories, of faiths and yearnings―for one shared night.

This memory is embedded in the building's unique folding skin. Through historical research and common imagination, we seek to read the contemporary mythology being written across its surface. The chapter on “Stone” addresses the deep history, the present, and a future. “Carnival” will address the cultural and identity polyphony that the structure enables through the thickness and foldedness of its envelope. “Gate” examines the porous nature of the building’s envelope as a technology for reciprocity, drawing on the site’s long history as a gate to the old city of Jerusalem. In addition, “Oasis” reflects on the ecological and social oasis that has evolved on the building’s rooftop over the past decade, while “Spiral” explores the spiral character of the Clal Center―an organic structure that draws in surrounding streets into a continuous whole. Further elaborations on each chapter are provided through QR code.
