A12 [Reus] Boca de la Mina Promenade

A12 [Reus] Boca de la Mina Promenade
The Boca de la Mina Promenade was originally an agricultural track that connected the town with local mills, farmland, and the underground cistern. Built in the mid-nineteenth century, it was established as a place where citizens would stroll and enjoy leisure, engraved in the city’s collective imaginary as an emblematic space of natural, heritage, and sentimental value.
This project seeks to condition the promenade as a healthy space, emphasize its centuries-old identity, and promote its agricultural memory in contact with the landscape of the Camp de Tarragona.
The main goal was to preserve the identity of the place at all costs. The identity is expressed through its complex of trees, its earthy track, its romantic image, and the presence of landmarks such as fountains, the torrent, irrigation ponds, and the Boca de la Mina itself.
The actions to improve and refurbish the promenade are based on its standard section: the gradients were adjusted to resolve drainage problems, with new green gutters and water infiltration areas created. The existing plane trees were conserved and supplemented, while paving and new lighting improved accessibility and inclusivity without significantly altering the original earthy character.
The choice of materials was made by studying elements already present in the promenade and in nearby constructions, leading to the decision to use ceramic. Shaped in different formats and sizes, ceramic was applied to pavements, street furniture, and other characteristic elements, establishing a unitary language that integrates naturally into the environment and the identity of the place.
