A8 [Qinghuangdao, Shenzen, Shanghai, Yangzhou] The Void(Aranya Art Center)
We were asked to design an art center within a seaside resort community in the northern port city of Qinghuangdao. The client wanted a symbolic architecture that would be timeless, embodying seasonality and a strong connection to nature. Drawing on the notion of genius loci, we explored geography, climate, light, and form, and took inspiration from the nearby sea to encapsulate the natural wonder in the building.
To emphasize integration with the environment, as much attention was given to the internal courtyard, a communal space for residents, as to the exhibition halls. This courtyard can function as a pool or a performance platform, while the fortress-like exterior conceals the central void.
Inside the thick mass is a series of interlocking spaces. Visitors can meander freely, experiencing views inward and outward while slowly ascending. A spiralling promenade leads them through the programmatic spaces, starting with the cafe, multi-purpose gallery, and outdoor amphitheatre on the first floor, then passing through five distinct galleries before culminating at the rooftop with panoramic views over the activities below.
The facade, made of various textured concrete, can be likened to a rock set firmly in the shifting environment. Bronze elements act as accents on the heavy facade, catching light and drawing attention to the entry points of each gallery. In the evening, the building emanates light from within, transforming from a solid sculpture into a glimmering jewel.
