YARD (Jooeun Sung, Sang Hoon Youm, Eunseo Choi) During the conversion of a 100-year-old student dorm, Pinson Hall, to Yoon Dongju Memorial Hall, the architects simultaneously revealed and “erased” a number of architectural elements to expose the beauty of the original structure. Valuing the erased elements as a legacy of the preserved originality, the project presents the agonizing process of their erasure. At a time when it is difficult to derive a singular consensus on re-interpretation, renovation of heritage architecture leads us to many questions, including “what to erase and what to add.” The project poses this key question to discuss with architects and designers who face similar questions and hope to continue this dialogue to build a more sustainable city.
