Stitching the Skyline

Bernard Khoury
Stitching the Skyline
The Skyline Tower was completed in 2014. It is located 300 meters away from the southern limit of the port of Beirut where on August 4, 2020, an estimated 2,300 tons of ammonium nitrate exploded, resulting in what is considered one of the most powerful non-nuclear blasts in the history of humankind. In its initial architectural expression, the Skyline Tower addressed the port with a “defensive” posture, watching over the port like an urban sentinel. Today, in its sorry state, it stands as one of the most visible victims of the catastrophe. Stitching the Skyline is an installation that documents the recovery operation that we plan for the edifice within the context of the estimated 3.2km diameter of combustion of the blast.
