Living Landscape

Jakob+MacFarlane
Living Landscape
The idea of living with and around nature is key to our project. On a 9,000 m² plot on the edge of a large brownfield in Reykjavik, Iceland, we grow a fragment of natural landscape― layering it on top of polluted land to heal the man-made damage to what has once been a beautiful coastal site. Around this new oasis, we build a ring-shaped urban hub that combines homes for students, seniors, and families with workspaces, daycare, and shops selling local products, all housed inside the country’s largest wooden structure. The landscape becomes a communal space for the residents. Offering an ecosystemic methodology for growing cities, Living Landscape is seen as a prototype for future urban developments around the world.
