Lubyanka Time Capsule, Moscow

Alexis Peyer
Lubyanka Time Capsule, Moscow
Lubyanka Square is arguably the most symbolic place in Russia. It notably houses the headquarters of the FSB (formerly KGB). Nowadays, as a no man's land in Moscow, its center is the heart of relentless struggles over how to occupy it. The proposal imagines digging a cylindrical shaft from street level to the metro station between the KGB tunnels. The sky penetrates deeply. On the sides, platforms follow the descent. The surrounding monuments gradually disappear, and we explore their foundations. The successive layers of history are linked to those of local geography. Urban space multiplies, “Piranesian” like an agora, a Platonic cave. The installation model is built upside down on a cylindrical pedestal that functions as an anamorphic device reflecting the historical panorama of the square.
