Increasingly, new urban developments are located in a peripheral territory with spatial forms and systems that fall outside the traditional urban-rural dichotomy. From the creation of new knowledge campuses in agricultural zones in Guangzhou to the development of new High-Speed Rail towns in Malaysia, these mega developments are rapidly implanted onto the peripheries of emerging cities.
Focusing on the peri-urban areas of the Guangzhou Knowledge City, located between the 2nd and 3rd ring road planned by the local government, the studio developed various proposals for a series of settlements, each supporting 2000 inhabitants ? the typical size of a village. While in Southern Malaysia, a set of proposals were developed to transform the peripheral spaces in four High-Speed Rail towns ? Seremban, Malacca, Muar and Batu Pahat ? into a productive territory.
Working at the intersection between the scale of architecture and urbanism, each group developed specific architectural elements that addressed issues of spatial ownership, resource sharing and the relationship between the private and the common.
Collectively, the goal of the studio is to develop a critical response towards emerging spatial forms and systems that falls outside the traditional definitions of urban/rural and town/city; and project a future for the peripheries of these emerging regions.
