Almost everyone acknowledges that the city is humankind’s single most important innovation. The city not only helps us to produce, organize and distribute material and immaterial assets, including, and especially, knowledge, but it also enables us to leverage, multiply and transform those assets in ways that would be inconceivable without the city. The city is an innovation precisely because it is the very milieu of human innovation itself. Established in April 2017, Xiong’an New Area is located about 100 km southwest of Beijing. Its primary function is to serve as a development hub for the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei(Jingjinji) economic triangle. Additionally, “non-core” functions of the Chinese capital are expected eventually to migrate here, including offices of some state-owned enterprises, government agencies and research and development facilities. Xiong’an will spur economic growth and assume many of Beijing’s non-governmental functions. It will also serve as an urban incubator that solves current problems while it simultaneously speculates about urban futures, offering solutions to problems not yet recognized in other cities.
