Inhabitable Territories

UNIVERSITY OF HONG KONG | Studio Leader : Geraldine Borio
Inhabitable Territories
Located on the ambiguous limits between the artificial and natural world, Seoul Urban Mountains inform us about the contemporary relationship between the city's inhabitant and the environment. Today, nature is also ‘experienced’ and consumed through fun and leisure activities but also hold a significant role in the building of cultural identity. The Seoul’s four inner mountains: Baegaksan, Naksan, Namsan, and Inwangsan was our case study for observing the visible manifestation of these human activities. From an architectural point of view, we have interrogated the way these cultural landmarks are spatially organized and the behavior they produce. The study has also revealed the underlying system at work that support this appreciation of the nature by highlighting programmatic and infrastructural continuities. The course was taking the form of a role-play where students endorse the role of different specialists involved in the place-making process. Putting on the shoes of the politician, historian, geographer, engineer and ethnographer provokes architects-to-be to reframe their perspective on their own future role. Based on the specialist’s view point, the students have developed their tools for reading, understanding and representing the manner in which the human or cultural element has manifested itself in the natural setting.
