Urban Hybrids: The Social Condenser as a Tool for the Regeneration
The studio reinterprets the Yakryeong Herbal Medicine Market in Dongdaemun as a social, cultural and productive collective infrastructure through the introduction of complementary programs and experiences catered to a growing tourist industry. Markets are not only productive and commercial infrastructures, but also centers of collective cultural production and exchange, and condensers of social relationships which empower communities. This design studio seeks to provide design solutions for the urban, programmatic and architectural regeneration of the Yakryeong Market, and for its strategic sustainability in the mid and long term. The urban renewal of the Yakryeong market does not only contemplate upgrading its physical infrastructure, but also rethinking the activities and events it hosts. A new paradigm of tourism based on active experience rather than on the passive transmission of information is introduced through phased sequences of temporal events. Over time these events develop into more permanent urban strategies, punctuated by a series of new anchor buildings which combine temporal housing programs with complementary amenities which expand the scope of the market, interfacing between visitors, market vendors and residents. These collective amenities support the long-term and sustainable regeneration of the area.
