Mobilizing Collectivity
This exhibition displays a compilation of collective efforts by the students from three schools during a design workshop held in Ho Chi Minh City. The students ventured out into the streets of this fascinating city armed with keen sensibility for analytical observation and fresh perspectives to collect evidences on how the residents demonstrate creative strategies to form a continuous and collective city. Urban research here resorts to learning from the experts: the locals. From the unwritten, implicit and temporal rules that govern the appropriation of public and private spaces for common use. A few keywords that captivated the minds of the researchers were Mobility, Fluidity, Linearity, Buffer, and Ground. At first glance, Ho Chi Minh City may appear similar to any tropical Asian city characterized by its density, aggregation, and polarized spectrum of building types. However, it does not take more than a few walks around the corner to realize that the true secret that makes this city mesmerizing lies not only in its physical built environment, but in the linear patterns of fluidity and mobility engraved in the ground levels by the people of this continuous collective city.
