LAND ARCHITECTURE, LAND URBANISM

CITY OF MOUNTAIN RANGES, WATERWAYS, AND WIND BREEZES, DRAWING OF THE SEOUL’S NEXT 100 YEARS

Land Architecture in our theme refers to architecture through which land, water, and wind penetrate. It is distinguished from ‘landscape architecture’ or ‘ground scape architecture.‘ It is a large-scale concept beyond landscape and architecture, dealing with environmental conditions and contexts with respect to nature that sprawls over land.

Land Urbanism in our theme refers to urbanism that blends with the natural harmony of land, water, and wind to form a collective impact. Hanyang (present-day Seoul) was the city that embodied characteristics of Land Urbanism. Our ancestors laid the groundwork for the county’s capital, envisioning natural harmony. Mount Bugaksan and Bukhansan in the north of the capital fend off the cold winter wind, while the river to its south takes in refreshing breezes in summer.

In this vein, the birth of Seoul was based on respect for the natural environment, but in the process of rapidly changing into a modern metropolis, Seoul‘s structure as a traditional city clashed with a modern city and has been segmented into pieces. Seoul‘s identity as a land city is disappeared. How should we be prepared for the next 100 years? A future city should be a pleasant and healthy one that adequately uses the nature of all seasons. Also, a future city should be an eco-friendly high- density city with efficiency in movement, energy, and time, incorporating technologies and data.

The theme for the SBAU 2023 is “Land Architecture and Land Urbanism,” which will introduce urban and architectural projects around the world designed concerning land environment and culture. Also, the SBAU 2023 aims to develop a roadmap for Seoul as an ultra-densely populated and an ecologically friendly city under the sub- theme, “City of Mountain Ranges, Waterways, and Wind Breezes - Drawing of Seoul‘s Next 100 years”. The biennale is composed of five sections; the Thematic Exhibition presents the concept and discourses related to the theme; the Seoul 100-year Masterplan Exhibition gathers global opinions about the future of Seoul; the Guest Cities Exhibition introduces the urban project of global cities on land urbanism; the On-site Project provides an experiential presentation on the theme; the Global Studios acts as an arena for discussion among architecture students of the world.

At the past three biennales, participants reflected on the future of Seoul based on the case studies and experts‘ opinions on other global cities. The SBAU 2023 will mark Seoul as a research subject and invite the participants to engage in multi- x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-layered discussions about Seoul. We expect the discussions made at the SBAU 2023 to serve as a platform to find the paths to land urbanism and act as adequate coordinates for constructing new cities.
