Zero-Energy Smart City Development

Modern cities are faced with the daunting challenge of improving the quality of life of their citizens without damaging the natural environment. While the notion of the “smart city” has often been proposed as a possible solution, no detailed models for its successful implementation have yet been outlined. Based on the concept of a “zero-energy town” in which the amount of energy consumed by the city is compensated for by the amount of energy it generates, the Sejong Multifunctional Administrative City’s 5-1 Zone elucidates a concrete plan for a real smart city.
Making energy flow efficient is the crucial factor in the development and management of an eco-friendly city. It is the factor directly linked to potential benefits for the city’s residents. Zero Energy Town presents the Multifunctional Administrative City Construction Agency’s project to implement the “Smart City Initiative: Zero Energy Town.” The plan consists of a series of ideas, approaches, and modalities to realize 5-1 Zone’s vision of a zero-energy town by integrating ICT, renewable energy technologies, and municipal smart grids.
