The Bench-Ladder Conversations: Between Systems and Madness

Mumbai’s urbanism is shaped through intense negotiations between systems that are put in place to regulate use of urban resources and individual madness that pushes itself beyond the boundaries set by the systems. Transactional objects and spaces are born in this context of this intense negotiation, significantly shaping urban form and life. As a way of understanding Mumbai’s urbanity, The Bench-Ladder Conversations sets up a conversation between systems and madness. The bench-ladder is one in a series of transactional objects and spaces, through which the conversation is conducted. It is a tool which, on the one hand, aids the painter in his work by day, and on the other, invites the community to come together and rest by evening.
