Messina Waterfront Polycenter: A Socio Economic and Cultural Catalyst

Known as the gateway for the Crusaders in the 11th century, Messina is a calm, established entrepot of continuous trading activities around the Mediterranean. Recently, Messina has been challenged by visible changes in urban development and the constant threats of seismic activity. This exhibition presents the competition entry of a new urban development project that has been initiated by the City of Messina. Throughout the development process, the municipality implemented numerous investigations to refine the project. The project has evolved from a strong urban settlement to a more subtle but equally exciting socio-economic and cultural intervention into the city. Revising the original design initiatives to reflect a more up-to-date social and economic projection of Messina, the project aims to generate a new form of architectural relationship with the city that goes beyond the conventions and traditions of urban development.
