The Vienna Model

The Vienna Model: Housing for the Twenty-First-Century City highlights the extraordinary 100 year achievements of the City of Vienna in the field of housing. The many new housing projects spread across the capital are unique examples of trailblazing architecture, urban habitation, neighborhood revitalization, and the creation of new communities. While based on the historic legacy of “Red Vienna,” they present dynamic new possibilities, prototypes, and advances in housing all segments of the contemporary city. The Vienna Model argues that it is not enough to simply display the compelling architecture of the housing. Instead, it goes behind the facades to describe the process that brought them to realization. It is through this design and planning process—created and refined over years of experience—that is communicated to international architects, housing activists, and planners; that is how they might apply the “Vienna Model” to the development of better housing in their own cities.
